The Zoological Gardens of Pistoia were founded and opened to the public in 1970. The Zoo is surrounded by pines, oaks and tropical trees and covers an area of over 7 hectares. It houses 600 animals belonging to different classes such as mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.
New exhibits have been created in order to assure animal welfare and guarantee visitors an excellent view in a natural context.
The education department, the Laboratorio della Biodiversità (visit our blog), organizes educational programmes for schoolchildren and visitors of all ages. Through interactive activities children and adults can learn more about the natural world.
