In support of SANCCOB

SANCCOB is a non-profit organisation operating in South-Africa. Its primary objective is to reverse the decline of seabird populations, especially endangered species like the African penguin which was listed as endangered in 2010.

The threats

This species has declined dramatically in the wild over the past 30 years as a result of:

– oil spills at sea due to tanker accidents and the practice of transferring fuel from one ship to another at sea

-food shortage due to the change of distribution of fish species in the oceans due to climate change, and increased commercial fishing

-disturbance of nest sites leading to the abandonment of eggs and chicks by birds

The project

SANCCOB Veterinarians, biologists and volunteers are engaged daily in:

-recovering injured or oil-stained penguins which, after a rehabilitation period of 4-16 weeks, are released into the sea

-collecting abandoned eggs and chicks to raise them

-teaching local people how to intervene whenever they find a bird in distress

-participating in research programmes to improve breeding and recovery techniques for seabirds

Results

SANCCOB’s work is now considered vital to avert the risk of extinction of the African penguin. In 2021 there were:

  • 63 recovered penguins
  • 513 chicks bred
  • 269 incubated eggs

All the valuable recovery and breeding work enables the population to be restored in the wild.
