Great Cormorant

Phalacrocorax carbo

The great cormorant is an excellent swimmer, pursuing fish underwater with the help of its powerful webbed feet, which are positioned far back on the body. This makes it less agile on land but highly efficient while diving. It is a social bird that often gathers with other individuals to rest and breed.

IUCN RED LIST

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) classifies living species according to criteria that take into account their level of threat of extinction: the Red List is an indispensable tool for coordinating nature conservation actions, a veritable barometer of the health of our Planet.

Lives in Europe, Asia, Australia, North America, North Africa

Fun Fact

I GO INTO THE WATER… AND GET WET

Cormorants, unlike most aquatic birds, have less waterproof feathers, so when they dive to catch fish, they get wet. Once on land, they must spread their wings in the sun to dry off.
