Leafcutter ant

Atta sexdens

Leafcutter ants live in colonies that can contain millions of individuals, each with a specific role. Workers of different sizes cooperate to cut and carry leaves, tend the fungus, defend the nest, and care for the queen and larvae. This remarkable organisation allows the colony to function as a single superorganism.

Lives in Central and South America

Fun Fact

They were the first to invent agriculture: they cut leaves and carry them to the deepest part of the nest to use as a substrate for a fungus they cultivate and then feed on its hyphae.
