Nose-horned Viper
Vipera ammodytes
The Nose-horned Viper is mainly solitary and leads a secretive life, remaining motionless for long periods while waiting to ambush passing prey. The distinctive horn-like projection on its snout, formed by modified scales, sets it apart from all other European vipers. It feeds mainly on small mammals, birds and lizards, helping to regulate their populations. In some areas, populations are threatened by habitat loss and persecution by humans.
