Swamp Wallaby
Wallabia bicolor
With its powerful hind legs, the swamp wallaby moves through the forests and woodlands of eastern Australia with long leaps that allow it to travel easily through dense vegetation. Active mainly at dusk and during the night, it spends the hottest hours hidden in the undergrowth. Increasing urbanisation, road traffic and introduced predators, such as foxes and feral dogs, are now the main threats to this species.

EEP Project
This species is included in EAZA’s (European Association of Zoos and Aquariums) EEP programme for breeding endangered species.

A Full-Time Mum
Females of all kangaroo species have two uteri, but the Swamp Wallaby uses them simultaneously.
Near the end of pregnancy, while still nursing an older joey, the female can mate again and carry one young that is ready to move into the pouch, where it will continue growing for another 7-8 months, in one uterus, while a second embryo is developing in its early stages in the other.
