Brachypelma smithi

Brachypelma smithi

The Mexican red-knee tarantula spends most of its life inside a burrow, emerging mainly at dusk to hunt insects and other small animals. It is a shy species that, when threatened, usually relies on defensive displays or flicks the irritating hairs from its abdomen rather than biting. Illegal collection for the pet trade and habitat loss have contributed to the decline of some wild populations.

IUCN RED LIST

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) classifies living species according to criteria that take into account their level of threat of extinction: the Red List is an indispensable tool for coordinating nature conservation actions, a veritable barometer of the health of our Planet.

Fun Fact

The name “tarantula” originated in the late 15th century in Taranto, where it was used to refer to a small spider, Lycosa tarantula, whose bite was believed to cause an illness that could be cured by jumping and dancing.
