Brazilian guinea pig

Cavia aparea porcellus

The domestic guinea pig lives in groups and communicates with other individuals through a rich repertoire of vocalisations, body postures and scent signals. Domesticated more than 5,000 years ago in the Andes, it is still kept in many parts of South America today. Curious and highly social, it feels safest in the company of its own kind and forms stable relationships within the group.

Native to the American South, it is now widespread worldwide as a pet
