Greater Rhea
Rhea americana
The greater rhea is the largest bird in South America and, although it cannot fly, it is an excellent runner capable of reaching high speeds to escape predators. During the breeding season, the male builds the nest, incubates the eggs laid by several females, and cares for the chicks until they become independent.
