Alpaca
Vicugna pacos
Native to the South American Andes, the alpaca has lived alongside local communities for thousands of years and is mainly bred for its soft, durable fleece. It is a highly social animal that feels safest in a herd and communicates through body postures, vocalisations and ear movements. Perfectly adapted to life at high altitude, it can withstand extreme temperature changes and moves with ease across steep, rocky terrain.
It is kept as a domestic animal throughout the world.
