Blue-and-yellow Macaw

Ara ararauna

With its powerful bill, the Blue-and-yellow Macaw can crack open the hard shells of seeds and fruits that are inaccessible to many other animals. It lives in long-lasting pairs, maintaining a strong bond with its partner through vocal communication and mutual preening. In tropical forests, it plays an important role in seed dispersal, helping to regenerate the vegetation.

IUCN RED LIST

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) classifies living species according to criteria that take into account their level of threat of extinction: the Red List is an indispensable tool for coordinating nature conservation actions, a veritable barometer of the health of our Planet.

Fun Fact

Macaws use their left foot more often to grasp food, just as we generally use our right hand.
This behavior seems to be due to the greater development of the right side of the macaw’s brain compared with the left side.
