Cyprinus carpio

Koi are an ornamental variety of the common carp, bred in Japan for centuries for their remarkable colours and patterns. They are gregarious fish that can reach impressive sizes and live for many decades when kept in suitable conditions. Because they are not wild fish, they should never be released into lakes or rivers, where they can disrupt natural ecosystems and compete with native species.

Domestication began in China. Today, it is bred all over the world.

A LONG-LIVED COMPANION

Bred for ornamental purposes, today it comes in many color variations; specimens with trendy colorations are worth thousands of euros.
If properly cared for, it can be a companion for many years: a koi carp named Hanako lived for an impressive 225 years.
