In defence of the Annam Gibbon

The project for the conservation of the Annam’s Gibbon (Nomascus annamensis) is a cooperation between the Stiftung Artenschutz and the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) and operates in the Kon Ka Kinh National Park (KKK) in the central highlands of Vietnam.

Threats

The Annam’s gibbon, which was only discovered in 2010, was immediately assessed by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) as a highly endangered species due to deforestation and poaching. The young are captured to be sold as pets while the adults are killed to use their meat as a food resource and any other parts as ingredients in traditional medicine.

The project

The aim is to create a large protected area to enable this wonderful primate to survive in the long term.

To realise the project it is necessary:

  • to train rangers to counter poaching activities
  • involve the local population with educational activities in schools to raise the value of forest and gibbon conservation
  • establish a network of volunteers to support the rangers’ monitoring and control activities
  • create support among the population for the establishment of the protected area

Report 2021:

  • 8 groups of gibbons identified
  • 2 hunters in the protected area reported to the authorities
  • 130 traps removed
  • 5 camps used for illegal logging destroyed
  • removed 125 people who had entered Kon Ka Kinh National Park illegally
